Adani Green Energy, a subsidiary of Adani Group, announced that its Board of Directors has approved raising up to ₹12,300 crore (approximately $1.5 billion) via a qualified institutional placement (QIP) of shares. This fundraising move is aimed to alleviate concerns over the company’s financial position following a sharp decline in stock prices earlier this year along with rising debt levels and the infamous Hindenburg Report in late January.
A qualified institutional placement (QIP) is a fund-raising tool used by publicly listed companies to issue shares to institutional investors. The QIP process involves the sale of securities to qualified institutional buyers, including mutual funds, insurance companies, and foreign portfolio investors. The issuing company benefits from the infusion of fresh capital, while the institutional investors receive shares in the company, which they can sell for a profit. QIPs can offer several advantages, including greater flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and a wider pool of investors.
The fund raising would be done through issuance of equity shares and or other eligible securities or any combination thereof, for an amount not exceeding Rs 12,300 crore by way of QIP or other permissible mode, Adani Green said in a BSE filing earlier today. The proceeds from this QIP will reportedly be used for funding expansion projects of renewable energy, acquisitions, and reducing debt levels. The fundraising is expected to strengthen parent company Adani Group’s market dominance and could potentially increase its market capitalization by one-third. The positive announcement led the company’s shares to rise after the news.
Adani Green Energy aims to become the world’s largest renewable energy company and is aggressively expanding its capacity with a projected target of 25GW renewable power generation by 2025. It is presently India’s largest solar power producer with an installed capacity of over 15 GW.
If this is a futile attempt at trying to regain the company’s share price or market cap, or a decision which will be utilized well in the future, only time will tell.
